Microchip Sized Fan

Have anther good look at engadget today and found something very interesting...

Some researchers from Thorn Mirco Technologies have created a fan not much larger than a twenty cent piece that doesn't use mechanical means to do the cooling.

This fan uses a similar system to household air purifiers, it uses a series of live wires that generate micro-scale plasma (an ion-rich gas that has free electrons that conduct electricity). These ions push neutral air particles from the wire to the plate generating wind. This phenomenon is called corona wind.

This new technology is reportedly more effective than a mechanical fan of a similar size. The breeze generated through this new technolgy can reach 2.4m per second, compared to ist mechanical counterpart with is between 0.7 and 1.7m per second.

I look forward to seeing this technology in action, it would help greatly with a large number of heating issues.
